Tunisia: World Bank Seeks Cooperation on Transport Improvements
Summary:
On Monday 10 March 2025, Tunisian transport minister, Rachid Amri, received a World Bank delegation headed by the World Bank Country Manager for Tunisia, Alexander Arrobbio, as part of an evaluation of the integrated disaster resilience program.
The two sides discussed the prospects of cooperation in the field of urban transport, especially ways to support the Tunis Transport Company with strengthening its fleet and improving its services for citizens.
The meeting also focused on the integrated disaster resilience program funded by the World Bank and the French Development Agency (AFD), with a focus on projects under the National Institute of Meteorology.
These projects are aimed at modernizing and enhancing meteorological monitoring systems capabilities intended to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts and improve the quality of meteorological services provided.
Outlook:
The relationship between Tunisia and the World Bank faced challenges in recent years after the Bank paused the Country Partnership Framework and withdrew the Framework from Board review following President’s Kais Saied remarks on the migration issue in 2023. However, the partnership has now been successfully restored.
The Tunisian government is seeking to contain domestic and international criticism by moving forward on infrastructure projects, especially those related to the transport sector, which is experiencing significant setbacks prompting growing frustration among Tunisian citizens.
Cooperation with the World Bank on specific transport projects reflects the government’s commitment to improving the sector’s services and integrating more digital solutions to better meet citizens’ needs.
