Algeria: Geospatial Imaging Satellite Launched from Facility in China
Summary:
On 15 January 2026, a new Algerian Earth observation satellite, Alsat-3A, was launched from the Jiuquan launch base in northwest China. The launch was carried out in cooperation between the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL) and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
The operation was attended by General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the Algerian National People’s Army, from a satellite remote-sensing station in Algeria. According to the Ministry of National Defence, Alsat-3A is intended to provide very high-resolution observation data and strengthen Algeria’s geospatial capabilities, including mapping and geographic information systems.
This most recent satellite launch follows prior Algerian Earth observation satellites launched in 2002, 2010, and 2016.
Outlook:
While this launch is likely institutionally and symbolically relevant for Algeria’s technological posture and partnerships, it does not appear to be transformative at the regional or international scale. Rather, this effort is a continuation of a progressive strategy to expand geospatial imaging and intelligence gathering capabilities, likely for both domestic and regional use.
The launch’s significance remains mainly technical and programmatic rather than geopolitical or strategic. The event also highlights strengthened Algeria–China cooperation in technological and military domains, added to economic and logistical ties.
