Mauritania: Nouakchott Trade Fair Showcases Algier’s Westward Push
Summary:
The 8th edition of the Algerian Products and Services Fair in Nouakchott concluded on 11 May 2026 with the signing of 70 commercial agreements across trade, transport, healthcare, innovation, and tourism. The week-long event, running from 5 to 11 May, was organized by Algeria’s Ministry of External Trade and Export Promotion, with signing ceremonies attended by Algeria’s Ambassador to Mauritania Amine Sid, representatives of the Algeria-Mauritania Business Council, and the director general of Mauritania’s Investment Promotion Agency (APIM).
Among the headline deals was a $50 million agreement covering the export and shipment of 500,000 tonnes of Algerian cement to Mauritania, involving Air Algerie Cargo and subsidiaries of the Algerian Maritime Transport Group. In healthcare, the Algerian clinic El Azhar signed four memoranda of understanding with Mauritanian public and private medical establishments. Agreements in agri-tech saw Algerian start-ups enter partnerships for smart agricultural solutions and expertise-sharing.
Outlook:
The fair’s format, now in its eighth edition, has evolved into a structured channel for bilateral deal-making rather than a purely promotional exercise. The cement and healthcare components are particularly indicative of Algeria’s approach: cement exports leverage domestic overcapacity while building infrastructure ties, and healthcare partnerships create institutional linkages that carry long-term reputational value in Mauritanian public discourse. Both point to a deliberate effort to embed Algerian commercial presence in sectors that generate durable dependency rather than one-off transactions.
