Tunisia: Part-Time Teachers Protest After Rejecting Government Proposal

by | Nov 30, 2023 | Economic, Political, Social, Tunisia

Summary:

Last week, Tunisia part-time and substitute teachers continued protests after negotiations with the Ministry of Education failed to bring about an agreement on their status.

Organizers representing the part-time teachers rejected a proposed contract from the Ministry, claiming that it does not ensure their rights or offer more stable employment.

The conflict has been ongoing for months, with frustrations peaking at the end of the prior school year when teachers threatened to withhold final grades and test scores.

Outlook:

Despite assurances from the Ministry of Education, the issue of part-time teacher contracts has continued to create issues, intermittently leading to protests. Our team is monitoring the negotiations for potential disruptions to the public education system which could have far-reaching consequences.
