Tunisia: Chinese Electric Carmaker BYD Deepens Foothold
Summary:
On 27 June 2024, Chinese company BYD organized a launch event that included the official introduction of five new car models to the Tunisian market, three of which are electric battery vehicles and two of which are hybrid electric models.
The event was widely publicized and attended by the company’s clients and journalists. The Director of Helios Cars – one of BYD’s subsidiaries in Tunisia- mentioned BYD’s achievements in China and Europe and plans to expand throughout the African market.
Outlook:
BYD is likely seeking a foothold in Tunisia as the government seeks to reduce its greenhouse emissions. Since 2022, Tunisia has sought to attract electric vehicles providers through import-tax waivers and by constructing and promoting electric vehicle charging stations.
BYD is also likely to position itself to win Tunisian government contracts that would aim to revitalize or update public transport facilities.
In June 2022, Tunisian President Kais Saied visited BYD’s headquarter in China. The President’s meeting preceded a second meeting between BYD’s director for the Middle East and the Tunisian Minister of Industry and Energy, pointing to efforts by the company to play a role in Tunisian government investments in the future.
BYD’s progress in Tunisia reflects broader Chinese influence in North Africa and highlights the renewable energy sector as another sector where competitiveness with Western companies is rising.
