Morocco: Chinese Rail-Sea Shipping Corridor to Expand Connectivity to Asia
Summary:
On 7 July 2025, Moroccan newspaper, Medias24, reported that China launched its first rail-sea logistics corridor to Morocco which would mark a significant milestone in enhancing trade connectivity between China and Africa.
The new route follows a strategic trajectory that starts from Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan province, and continues by rail through Poland, Germany, and Spain. From there, containers are transferred to ships in Barcelona for maritime transport to Tanger Med, Morocco’s largest port.
According to the same source, the project forms part of an integrated logistics strategy that combines trans-European rail transport with Mediterranean maritime shipping. It aims to cut costs, enhance delivery reliability, and facilitate faster access to North African markets. The initiative is being spearheaded by Sichuan Silk Road Supply Chain Management, in collaboration with DPD (Deutscher Paketdienst), a subsidiary of the French postal group La Poste.
Additionally, transit times from Asia to North Africa could be reduced from 35 to just 20 days, although this service may come at a higher cost. Besides streamlining the entry of Chinese goods into Morocco, the new route aims to enhance Moroccan industries’ access to the Chinese market.
Outlook:
By integrating Morocco into China’s new rail-sea logistics corridor, the project will elevate its status as a crucial gateway and regional hub. Reduced transit times and enhanced trade reliability will accelerate Moroccan exports and expand access to Asian markets. Meanwhile, China will continue to grow its foothold in Africa with expanded trade infrastructure that will increase the competitiveness of Chinese firms across numerous industries and markets.
This strengthened connectivity is likely to attract foreign investment, stimulate industrial development, and boost overall trade volumes, significantly benefiting Morocco’s economy. It also aligns with Morocco’s recent efforts to upgrade its railway infrastructure and attract greater interest from Western businesses and investors.
The initiative also reflects Morocco’s geopolitical position at the intersection of Africa, Europe, and Asia, a factor that is likely to deepen economic ties with China and other international partners, paving the way for future bilateral projects and partnerships.
