Summary:

On 12 November 2025, GreenGo Energy A/S, a Danish renewable energy developer, and Hamburg-based S.E.T. Select Energy GmbH and its affiliate, Select New Energies GmbH, announced a strategic partnership to co-develop and secure supply and distribution for the Megaton Moon green ammonia project.

The project, located 20 km south of Nouakchott, is reportedly set to produce green ammonia using solar and wind power. It will use seawater desalination and nitrogen extracted from the air to generate green hydrogen, which will then be converted into ammonia for use in industries such as fertilizers, petrochemicals, transportation, and power generation.

Phase 1 is expected to produce 355,000 tons of ammonia per year by 2031, with potential future expansions taking production up to 4 million tons annually. The project has reportedly received recognition and fiscal support from the Mauritanian government.

Outlook:

The Megaton Moon project reflects Mauritania’s ambition to leverage its renewable energy potential for large-scale, export-oriented green industry, positioning the country as a future hub for sustainable fuels in Africa. Despite a range of challenges facing the Mauritanian economy, this ammonia project marks another step in a concerted effort to welcome innovative, renewable energy-focused projects to meet evolving European energy demands.

The partnership underscores the importance of international collaboration in advancing complex energy transitions and the role of government support in attracting strategic investment.

The project will strengthen Mauritania’s energy infrastructure, expand industrial capacity, and provide access to global green fuel markets, contributing to both national economic development and global decarbonization efforts.
