Algeria: Cooperation on Energy Continues with Oman, Mozambique
Summary:
On 20 May 2026, Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies received a high-level Mozambican delegation to discuss cooperation on a 1,000 MW electricity generation project planned for Mozambique, aimed at developing energy infrastructure through Algerian technical expertise.
The discussions form part of broader efforts to strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries, with a focus on large-scale infrastructure development and regional capacity building in Southern Africa.
On the same day, Sonatrach signed a memorandum of understanding with Oman’s Petrogas Exploration & Production to explore potential cooperation in oil and gas exploration and production activities in Algeria. The agreement was concluded on the sidelines of an energy sector forum in Oman and brings together the Algerian state energy company and an international operator with activities across multiple regions.
Outlook:
With these new agreements, Algeria is likely to further expand its external energy engagement, strengthening its footprint in African infrastructure projects while deepening cooperation in hydrocarbons with selected international partners.
This reflects a broader effort to position Algerian technical and industrial capacity within regional electricity development and upstream energy value chains amid a more uncertain global energy environment, where producers are increasingly seeking to diversify partnerships and reduce exposure to geopolitical and logistical disruptions.
