Algeria: Cooperation with Chad Signals Algiers’ Emerging Regional Leadership Role

by | Apr 22, 2026 | Algeria, Diplomacy, Economic

Summary:

On 22 April 2026, Algeria and Chad signed 27 cooperation agreements covering multiple sectors during the 4th session of the Joint Governmental Commission held in Algiers. The meeting brought together officials from both countries to discuss bilateral relations and coordination on regional issues.

The agreements include areas such as energy, transport, education, health, training, and trade, and provide for expanded cooperation between the two sides. Discussions also addressed shared security concerns in the Sahel region, including the situations in Libya and Mali, as well as counterterrorism efforts.

Chad’s oil production and natural resource potential were highlighted as areas for cooperation, with a focus on developing refining capacity and technical expertise. The agreements are part of ongoing bilateral engagement between Algeria and Chad.

Outlook:

While Algeria is increasingly focusing on expanding its energy sector amid rising global demand linked to disruptions from the Iran conflict, Chad emerges as a strategic partner that could support this trajectory through its untapped hydrocarbon and mineral potential.

The partnership could offer Algeria an opportunity to extend its role beyond a supplier toward a regional energy and technical actor, particularly by developing refining capacity and expertise in Chad’s energy sector.

This dynamic also aligns with Algeria’s broader positioning as a reliable alternative energy provider in a context of strained global supply chains. More broadly, the expansion of sectoral agreements with Chad signals additional steps in Algeria’s broader effort to reposition itself as a regional and continental power, leveraging economic partnerships to consolidate its influence across Sub-Saharan Africa.
