Summary:

On 26 August 2026, Morocco’s OCP Group and US farmer-owned cooperative CHS announced a proposed joint venture to build a phosphate fertilizer plant in Waggaman, Louisiana, with an investment of up to $450 million. 

The facility is expected to produce more than 1 million tons of phosphate-based fertilizer annually, making it the first new US plant of its kind since 1984. OCP will supply phosphoric acid to the facility, while CHS and OCP North America will distribute the finished products through their respective US networks. 

The project is intended to reduce US reliance on imported phosphate fertilizer by more than 48% and has been submitted for potential support under the US Department of Agriculture’s FIELDS program.12 .

Outlook: 

The project marks a deeper integration of OCP’s Moroccan phosphate supply chain into the US agricultural market, moving the company beyond supplying the US market toward establishing production capacity on American soil. 

The move should strengthen OCP’s position in the US fertilizer market while aligning its expansion with Washington’s push to reduce dependence on imported agricultural inputs. For Morocco, the partnership also provides a stronger commercial foothold in the US and links OCP’s global phosphate assets more directly to American food-security priorities.
