Summary:

Mauritania and Germany signed a €35 million financial cooperation agreement to strengthen bilateral cooperation in vocational training, biodiversity protection and blue economy development. The agreement was signed in Nouakchott by Mauritania’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, Abdallah Souleymane Cheikh Sidiya, and Germany’s Ambassador to Mauritania, Florian Reindel. 

€20 million will support technical and vocational training by improving program quality and aligning courses with labour-market needs. The funding will also be used to upgrade vocational training institutions and strengthen their links with the private sector. A further €15 million will support coastal biodiversity and blue economy development, with a focus on marine research and sustainable management of coastal resources. 

Outlook: 

The agreement reinforces Mauritania’s efforts to maintain and deepen established European partnerships while attracting external support for sectors linked to its longer-term development priorities. 

Germany’s continued financial engagement also gives the bilateral relationship greater depth beyond traditional development assistance, particularly as Mauritania places greater emphasis on workforce development and its Atlantic economy. 

This is consistent with Nouakchott’s broader approach of expanding practical cooperation with external partners without allowing its foreign relations to become concentrated around a single country or source of support.
