Summary:

On 14 June 2026, Sonatrach signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with German company VNG AG to explore cooperation in green hydrogen, ammonia development, and methane emissions reduction, building on discussions initiated under a 2022 agreement. 

The agreement outlines potential joint projects aimed at advancing decarbonisation efforts within the hydrocarbons sector, while strengthening technical and industrial collaboration between both companies. 

Both parties framed the MOU as part of a broader commitment to energy transition objectives and climate-related targets, with Sonatrach emphasizing its intent to expand engagement in low-carbon energy solutions. 

Outlook: 

This agreement adds to a gradual expansion of structured cooperation between Algerian and European energy actors in energy transition-related fields, aligning with Sonatrach’s broader effort to diversify its industrial and technological partnerships beyond traditional hydrocarbons.  

The parallel development of projects such as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) highlights how Algeria continues to pursue large-scale export infrastructure while simultaneously opening new channels linked to hydrogen and emissions reduction.
