Summary:

On 5 August 2026, Algerian Civil Protection authorities, backed by the People’s National Army, continued large-scale firefighting operations in northern Algeria. 

According to the Directorate General of Civil Protection’s (DGPC) operational update covering 4–5 August, authorities recorded 54 wildfires, 50 of which had been extinguished at the time of reporting.  

Aerial water bombers, heavy-lift helicopters, and ground reinforcements were deployed to contain the most significant outbreaks, particularly in the mountainous provinces of Tizi Ouzou and Béjaïa. 

Outlook: 

The extensive deployment of Civil Protection units and military assets highlights Algeria’s capacity to mobilize significant resources in response to wildfire outbreaks. However, the persistent challenges from wildfires shows how vulnerable Algeria is to this risk at the convergence point of human factors and climate impacts. 

Authorities are likely to maintain heightened monitoring and precautionary measures in the coming days, as persistent high temperatures and the country’s mountainous and forested northern regions continue to increase vulnerability to fire outbreaks. Sustained preparedness efforts will remain essential to limit potential impacts on communities and infrastructure.
