Tunisia: Medical Equipment Distributors Warn of Supply Crisis Over Hospital Debt

by | Aug 20, 2026 | Economic, Security, Tunisia

Summary:

On 18 August 2026, Tunisia’s medical equipment distribution sector warned that mounting unpaid debts owed by public hospitals are creating severe liquidity pressures and threatening the ability of some companies to remain operational.

More than 30 companies represented at a meeting of the national chamber’s sector reported growing payment delays, with some describing their financial situation as becoming unmanageable.

The chamber said the cash-flow constraints are limiting companies’ ability to finance imports, replenish stocks, and maintain regular supplies to hospitals. It called for urgent government action to accelerate the settlement of outstanding hospital debts and prevent disruptions to the supply of medical equipment and supplies.

Outlook:

This development is likely to add to Tunisia’s already growing medical-sector crisis, as financial difficulties among suppliers risk further disrupting the availability of equipment in public hospitals. The dispute could also attract greater public attention to the government’s management of the healthcare system, particularly as concerns over shortages and deteriorating hospital services continue to generate scrutiny.

Pressure on the authorities is therefore likely to increase to clear outstanding payments and prevent the issue from developing into a wider supply disruption. Continued deterioration could further undermine confidence in public healthcare and provide additional grounds for criticism of the government.
