Summary:

On 17 August 2026, Mauritania’s General State Inspectorate (IGE) published its annual report covering inspections conducted in 2024 and 2025, identifying financial irregularities with a direct financial impact of more than MRU 2.37 billion across 35 inspection missions. 

The IGE said it had prevented MRU 603.76 million in potential waste, suspended MRU 694.69 million in unjustified payments, and recovered or was in the process of recovering MRU 524.48 million. The report also resulted in the dismissal of 20 officials and 11 disciplinary warnings, while cases representing around MRU 1.21 billion were referred to the judicial authorities. 

Outlook: 

The publication of the IGE findings is likely to increase pressure on the Mauritanian authorities to demonstrate that reported financial irregularities lead to concrete accountability, particularly given the scale of cases referred to the judiciary. 

The government’s handling of these cases will be closely watched for indications of whether the current anti-corruption drive is translating into consistent enforcement rather than remaining primarily administrative. 

Further scrutiny is also likely around public procurement, which was identified by the opposition as a major source of irregularities and remains an important area for governance and reputational risk.
