Summary:

On 26 August 2026, Algeria witnessed a wave of wildfires across several northern provinces, particularly in Jijel, Béjaïa and Tizi Ouzou, amid an intense heatwave. The wildfires resulted in at least 12 deaths and 54 injuries, while dozens of families were evacuated from affected areas as Civil Protection teams continued firefighting operations. 

Authorities reported 154 fire outbreaks nationwide, with the largest fires concentrated in the three provinces. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune  

declared three days of national mourning for the victims and instructed authorities to mobilize all available resources to contain the fires and support affected communities. 

Outlook: 

The immediate priority for Algerian authorities will be containing the remaining fires and supporting communities affected by the evacuations, particularly as the heatwave continues to sustain elevated fire risks. 

The scale of the August fires, following further fatalities in July, is likely to keep pressure on authorities to strengthen preparedness and response measures during the remainder of the summer. The main near-term concern is the potential for further disruptions in affected northern provinces as fires continue to threaten populated areas and key infrastructure.
