Mauritania: $5.1 Million from Japan to Boost Mauritanian Agriculture

by | Oct 3, 2026 | Economic, Mauritania

Summary:

On 2 October 2026, Mauritania and Japan signed two financing agreements worth a combined 800 million Japanese yen ($5.1 million). The grants, provided through Japan and JICA, will support agricultural training and food security programs.

The first grant will finance modern agricultural equipment and training materials for national agricultural and vocational training institutions in the Senegal River Valley. The second will support income-generating projects, replenish the national strategic grain reserve and strengthen the market’s ability to maintain regular supplies of basic food products.

Outlook:

The financing supports Mauritania’s efforts to strengthen domestic agricultural capacity and food security. Investment in agricultural training and equipment can help improve local production, while replenishing strategic cereal reserves gives authorities greater capacity to manage supply pressures.

These efforts also take place as continued insecurity in Mali creates additional pressure on food security and resources in Mauritania’s border regions. This adds importance to strengthening domestic agricultural capacity and maintaining adequate food reserves, particularly as external shocks can place further pressure on local supplies.
