Contingency Corner: Hibernation and Shelter-in-Place Sites
Hibernation (also known as shelter-in-place) may be called for when an organization’s personnel must remain in one place during a crisis.
Hibernation locations can be in homes, offices, or schools and should be maintained in the event of a crisis:
Consider the following steps when planning for hibernations in the event of a crisis:
- Consider the number of people that could hibernate in a location
- Prepare 36 – 48 hrs of food and water (non-perishable, non-frozen)
- Plan for backup communication methods from your hibernation location
- Check the food and water on at least a quarterly basis and replace expired items
- Consider whether a backup generator and fuel would be appropriate
