Mauritania: Danish Firm to Build Ambitious Green Energy Park
Summary:
On 17 February 2025, Danish energy firm, GreenGo Energy, announced being awarded the Megaton Moon green hydrogen project in Mauritania.
The firm signed an agreement with the Mauritanian Minister of Energy and Petroleum to access more than 100,000 hectares of land to implement the project.
GreenGo is now starting the development phase of the project with the goal of starting production by 2029. The “green energy park” will including desalination, wind, solar, and green ammonia production operations.
The Mauritanian Minister stated that the project “demonstrates the private sector’s continued confidence in the development of green hydrogen projects in Mauritania.”
Outlook:
The deal with GreenGo is likely to consolidate international confidence in the Mauritanian potential, allowing Mauritania to reinforce this strategic sector and promote employment in the country.
Mauritania is starting to bear fruit from its effort to attract investments in green energy which made significant strides with the adoption of the Green Hydrogen Code in 2024 and the establishment of a Green Energy Strategy since 2021. These administrative and policy efforts will be essential to creating an investment environment that is attractive to foreign investors and can offer a reliable business landscape for operations.
The Hydrogen Code offers export tax exemptions and reduced import duties on equipment in addition to delaying taxation for companies until they recuperate their initial investments. Such benefits will likely continue to garner interest from investors.
Previous deals with German, Egyptian and Emirati companies, and discussions with international partners, including the EU, to implement green hydrogen projects, are other examples of the success of Mauritania’s new legislative measures.
Mauritanian solar and wind energy potential is also attracting investment in the energy sector in addition to the country’s proximity to European markets and its lower production costs compared to Europe.
To this point, no protesters or activists are challenging the implementation of green hydrogen projects in Mauritania as has been the case in other countries, such as Tunisia.
