Algeria: European Commission in Algiers for Green Energy Talks
Summary:
On 22 April, a delegation from the European Commission met with the Secretary of State for the Algerian Minister of Energy, Noureddine Yassa, to discuss strengthening cooperation in renewable energy and green hydrogen.
The two sides stressed the need to support Algeria’s energy transition through the deployment of environmentally friendly technologies that reduce emissions while enhancing energy efficiency.
Algerian and European representatives exchanged views on the MEDLINK electricity interconnection project, which aims to strengthen the energy interconnection between Algeria and Europe. They also discussed the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2) project, which aims to export Algerian green hydrogen through Italy, Germany, and Austria to the European market.
Outlook:
Algeria is seeking to position itself to profit from European prioritization of transitioning to green energy, including green hydrogen. Should Algeria successfully position itself as a premier provider of green energy to Europe, it will strengthen its negotiating position on other economic deals with Europe and broader diplomatic and security issues in the region.
Algeria’s participation in the SoutH2 Project reflects the country’s intention to prioritize its renewable energy sector alongside fossil fuel production. This move is being driven by evolving European priorities and geopolitical pressures emanating from the Russian war in Ukraine.
Algeria remains a key player in Europe’s energy transition agenda despite deteriorating political relations due to tensions over the Western Sahara issue as well as the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and southern Lebanon.
