Mauritania: Green Ammonia Project Outlined in Further Push for Energy Investments
Summary:
On 8 September 2025, Polish firm Hynfra PSA, which focuses on green hydrogen and ammonia projects, signed a $1.5 billion framework agreement with the Mauritanian government to develop a green ammonia facility, set to begin commercial operations by 2030.
Signed during the MAURITANIDES 2025 conference in Nouakchott, the project aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, powered entirely by local solar and wind energy, with exports planned via the Port of Friendship in Nouakchott.
A similar framework was also signed with Hong Kong’s UEG Green Hydrogen Development Holding Limited (UEG), which aims to produce nearly one million tons of green ammonia annually across two sites in northern and central Mauritania, while also exploring the potential for producing green iron (HBI) or green steel.
Outlook:
With these agreements, Mauritania has further demonstrated its interest in positioning itself as an up-and-coming hub for green energy projects. While competition to attract green energy investment has been heating up across North Africa, Mauritania continues to punch above its weight.
The frameworks with Hynfra PSA and UEG signal growing international confidence in the country’s renewable potential and align with Mauritania’s ambition to position itself as a key supplier of green energy to European markets.
However, rising jihadist threats along the country’s borders could challenge long-term stability, the government’s commitment to securing its territory will be critical to sustaining investor confidence and advancing its clean energy ambitions.
