Mauritania: MFA Launches Campaign to Explain Migration Policy

by | Apr 14, 2025 | Diplomacy, Mauritania, Security

Summary:

On 8-9 April 2025, Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug kicked off a diplomatic campaign by calling and visiting several African counterparts to discuss the irregular migration issue.

The campaign coincides with efforts to deport irregular migrants present in the country and seeks to explain Mauritanian migration policy emphasizing “Mauritania’s rights to combat irregular migration and assure respect of residency conditions.”

The MFA stated that Mauritania is engaged in respecting bilateral agreements and human rights all while playing its “geopolitical role in combatting human trafficking networks.”

The Mauritanian diplomat also declared that 500 bodies were recovered from sea in 2024 and more than 100 since the start of 2025, urging his African counterparts to reunite efforts to prevent more loss of life.

Outlook:

Mauritania is likely seeking to avoid exacerbating tensions with African neighbors after migrant deportations in March sparked criticism from NGOs and were condemned by Senegalese diplomats.

As Mauritania is seeking joint projects like the Greater Tortue liquefied gas project with Senegal and regional initiatives like the electricity interconnectivity plans, keeping good relations with neighbors is essential.

Diplomatic talks will also focus on efforts to curb irregular migration from departure countries as Mauritania seeks to reduce flows which have transformed it into a transit country.
