Summary:

On 9 November 2024, the Minister of Communication Technologies announced plans to launch 5G services in Tunisia by January 2025.  

This update to the proposed timetable for 5G deployment represents a delay from the originally-announced rollout targeting November 2024. 

This announcement came at the International Forum of Information Systems Managers and just three weeks after the opening of financial offers presented by the three public telecommunications network operators: Tunisia Telecom, Ooredoo and Orange Tunisia. The financial offers constituted the last step toward finalizing the procedures for granting 5G licenses in Tunisia. 

According to the Minister of TIC, Sofian Hmissi, the deployment of 5G is part of the “state strategy for digital regional planning,” aimed at improving digital infrastructure and extending high-speed internet coverage across the entire country. 

Outlook: 

Development of 5G technology will bolster Tunisia’s efforts to modernize its digital infrastructure and will particularly benefit the service sector which represents 65% of the country’s GDP. 

5G deployment is also in line with the state’s aims to digitalize its administrative functions to facilitate access to public services and administrative procedures for Tunisian citizens and expatriates.  

The development of modern communication technologies will also favor innovative start-ups in the information technology sector and the further development of Artificial Intelligence in the country. 

The implementation of the 5G roadmap is also a sign of the outcomes of the cooperation between Tunisia and Chinese company Huawei which supported the establishment of the 5G infrastructure.
