Summary:

On 25 September 2026, Danish renewable energy developer GreenGo Energy signed a memorandum of cooperation with Chinese equipment manufacturer Jiangsu Shuangliang New Energy Equipment to advance the Megaton Moon green hydrogen and ammonia project in Mauritania.  

The agreement covers feasibility studies, front-end engineering and design, and technical support for the project’s hydrogen systems. The first phase is planned to include 500 MW of electrolysis capacity, 600 MW of wind and 600 MWp of solar capacity, producing around 355,000 tons of green ammonia annually. GreenGo Energy targets a final investment decision in 2028 and first production in 2031. 

Outlook: 

Mauritania’s new Megaton Moon green hydrogen projects is advancing alongside the Aman Green Hydrogen Project, pointing to a broad commitment from the country to position itself as a regional player in the emerging green energy landscape. The new partnership with Chinese expertise will add another layer to the country’s efforts to establish itself as a regional green hydrogen producer.  

Chinese technical expertise and equipment could support the development of large-scale projects such as Megaton Moon, while helping build the industrial capacity needed to convert renewable resources into exportable products. The parallel development of multiple projects could also strengthen Mauritania’s position in attracting further investment into its emerging renewable energy sector.
