Morocco: New Maritime Connection to Northern Europe to Increase Export Potential

by | Sep 9, 2025 | Diplomacy, Economic, Morocco

Summary:

On 4 September 2025, DP World, the Dubai-based logistics giant, announced the launch of its “Atlas” maritime service connecting Morocco’s ports of Agadir and Casablanca with London Gateway in the UK and Antwerp Gateway in northern Europe.

The service, set to begin operations in November 2025, will transport up to 150,000 tons of fresh produce annually using two dedicated vessels, 1,250 refrigerated containers, and 1,750 dry containers, and aims to reduce transit times for perishable goods while limiting delays commonly encountered with overland transport.

Additionally, the maritime route is projected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 70% compared with traditional trucking, translating to approximately 250 kg of CO₂ savings per ton-kilometer.

Morocco currently exports over 6.5 million metric tons of fruits and vegetables to western Europe annually, with volumes growing more than 20% year-on-year. This new service is expected to strengthen the reliability and sustainability of Morocco’s export supply chains.

Outlook:

Given Morocco’s strategic position along the Mediterranean near major European markets, the new Atlas maritime service could significantly advance the country’s regional trade and geopolitical positioning by strengthening direct links with major European markets. With a focus on developing modern, efficient, and high-capacity ports, Morocco is an increasingly competitive hub for global logistics and supply chains.

By leveraging its modern and well-developed ports at Agadir and Casablanca, Morocco can enhance its operational capacity and reliability, reinforcing its role as a strategic North African hub for exports.
