Summary:

On Friday, 25 November 2022, Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Othman Jerandi met with the European Union’s (EU) Special Representative for Sahel Africa. Special Representative Emanuela Del Re visited Tunisia which shares deep ties with Africa’s Sahel nations, particularly as it relates to irregular migration from Sub-Saharan Africa to Europe. Jerandi stressed the need for cooperation and holistic development to address the irregular migration challenge, while also emphasizing Tunisian’s critical role at a diplomatic and security crossroads with the Sahel countries.

Outlook:

As stressed during the meetings, Tunisia sits at a crossroads for irregular migration where European partners continue to work to intervene through direct security capacity building and other development projects. Recent financial commitments from the EU and its member states will help relieve some short-term economic strains . However, without a systemic evolution, Tunisia and its EU partners will continue to struggle to manage the impacts of the irregular migration challenge. Our team continue to monitors how EU countries and other partners approach their efforts to support Tunisia in this effort.
