Tunisia: Petrochemical Workers to Strike, Potentially Disrupting Fuel Supplies

by | Mar 11, 2023 | Economic, Tunisia

Summary:

On 10 March 2023, a UGTT official responsible for representing petrochemical workers announced that a strike scheduled for 15 and 16 March 2023 will take place as planned. Sofienne Smidi, the UGTT official speaking on behalf of workers from eight organizations, announced that the strike would take place due to non-compliance with a September 2022 agreement with the government to increase salaries by 5%. Furthermore, Smidi noted that the strike would impact the supply of fuel to service stations.

Outlook:

The conflict between Tunisia’s labor unions and the government continues to play out on a number of fronts, causing unpredictability in key sectors. If the government fails to reach an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or other lenders of a similar scale, such disruptions are likely to increase as the government will struggle to meet its financial demands.
