Tunisia: Police Clash with Protestors Following Death Attributed to Security Forces

by | Oct 16, 2022 | Security, Tunisia

Summary:

On the nights of 14 and 15 October 2022, Tunisian police and security forces faced sometimes violent demonstrations across two economically strained neighborhoods following the death of a local man during a pursuit by police. Mourners from the Ettadhem and Intilka neighborhoods gathered to express their frustrations with what they considered police brutality. The family of the 24 year- old deceased reported that he had died from a neck injury suffered during a fall as he was chased by police.

Outlook:

The clashes in the western neighborhoods of the capital of Tunis appeared isolated and largely distinct from the large-scale protests that took place along the Habib Bourgiba corridor downtown. The protests were held throughout the night and were largely driven by young men. Concerns about police corruption and professionalism abound across Tunisia, however, with ongoing economic struggles amplifying tensions, these protests were likely an expression of general frustration with the hardship faced by many in the country, especially those in more economically depressed areas of the capital where the cost of living is relatively high.
