On 28 July 2026, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reiterated calls for a revision of the Association Agreement between Algeria and the European Union, arguing that the framework no longer reflects current economic realities.  

During a regular meeting with national media, Tebboune stated that the agreement, signed in 2005, was concluded under a different context when Algeria was emerging from years of security instability and seeking greater international reintegration. 

Tebboune argued that Algeria’s economic landscape has evolved, citing efforts to strengthen domestic production, develop industrial capacity and reduce dependence on imports. He called for a framework that would provide greater opportunities for Algerian exports, particularly to European markets, while maintaining what he described as a more balanced partnership with the EU. 

Outlook: 

Tebboune’s call for revising the agreement likely reflects Algeria’s perception that its regional and international position has evolved, particularly as energy security concerns have increased amid disruptions in global supply routes and geopolitical tensions, including the crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.  

Algiers appears to be seeking a more balanced relationship with European partners, one that gives greater weight to its economic interests and growing strategic relevance. 

However, the remarks could also remain largely symbolic if they are not followed by concrete negotiations or adjustments to the existing framework. Despite recurring calls from Algerian officials to reassess the partnership, the EU remains a major economic and energy partner, making significant changes to the relationship dependent on the ability of both sides to reconcile their diverging priorities.
