Summary:

On 27 August 2025, Tech in Africa and other online sources reported that Libya officially inaugurated its first solar power plant in the remote southeastern region of Kufra, situated in the heart of the Sahara Desert near the borders with Egypt, Sudan, and Chad.

The plant, which was commissioned earlier on 15 August 2025, has a capacity of 1 MW and an estimated annual production of 2,182 MWh, enough to power 500–1,000 households. The project is expected to reduce diesel consumption by 545,000 liters per year and cut carbon emissions by 1,300 tons annually.

The project was developed by Infinity Libya, the Libyan subsidiary of Infinity Power, in partnership with Touch Company, and will be operated by trained Libyan engineers. The plant aligns with Libya’s renewable energy strategy, which targets 4 GW of renewable capacity by 2035, representing 20% of the national energy mix, amid rising electricity demand projected to reach 20 GW.

Outlook:

As Libya moves to expand its renewable energy sector, the Kufra solar plant could serve as a blueprint for future projects, demonstrating the viability of solar development in remote desert regions. The project may encourage further investment from regional and international partners, particularly in public-private partnerships, and could strengthen Libya’s industrial hubs by providing a more reliable local electricity supply that reduces dependency on oil.

If the country maintains political stability and develops supportive regulatory frameworks, similar initiatives could gradually reduce dependency on fossil fuels, mitigate environmental impacts, and contribute to long-term energy diversification.

Additionally, building local technical expertise through such projects may enhance Libya’s capacity to manage larger renewable infrastructure in the future, potentially positioning the country as a regional player in sustainable energy development.
