Tunisia: Vision for Stability in Libya Drives Tunis’ Diplomatic Agenda
Summary:
This week, the recently appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Tunisians Abroad, Nabil Ammar, reaffirmed Tunisia’s support for Libya reaching a lasting political solution. Ammar’s statements came over the course of multiple meetings this week, both in Tunis with UN envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily, and in Addis Ababa with Vice-President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, on the sidelines of the African Union summit.
One of Tunisia’s key contributions to the political balance in Libya has been its support for the United Nations-led peace process. Tunisia has worked closely with the UN to support political dialogue and reconciliation between the warring factions in Libya. In 2015, Tunisia hosted the UN-brokered talks that led to the signing of the Libyan Political Agreement, which established the Government of National Accord (GNA) as the internationally recognized government of Libya.
Tunisia has also been an advocate for political dialogue and reconciliation between the different factions in Libya, having encouraged the parties to come to the negotiating table. In 2018, Tunisia hosted talks between the GNA and the Libyan National Army (LNA) to work toward a solution to the conflict. Tunisia has worked closely with the UN and other international actors to support efforts to address the flow of refugees and migrants, and to combat terrorism in the region.
Outlook:
Tunisia’s efforts to broker peace in Libya have been driven by a desire to see stability in its neighbor to the east. The conflict in Libya has had a significant impact on Tunisia, particularly in terms of security and the flow of refugees and migrants across the border.
