Tunisia: Ties with Syria Resumed as Search for Earthquake Survivors Continues
Summary:
On 6 February 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. The death toll has continued to rise, topping 30,000 as the search for survivors continues. Tunisia dispatched search and rescue teams to both Turkey and Syria to assist in searching for survivors. Other North African countries, including Algeria, have also sent teams to assist in the massive search operation.
On 9 February, President Kais Saied announced plans to resume diplomatic relations with Syria after a nearly 10-year hiatus marked by the protracted civil war in Syria. Saied remarked that the civil war was an internal matter to Syria, though several thousand Tunisians are thought to have fought or be fighting there.
