Tunisia: $900 Million US Army Javelin Contract Includes Tunisia Sales, Services
Summary:
On 4 September 2025, The Defense Post reported that the US Army awarded a follow-on production contract worth up to $900.5 million to the Raytheon–Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) for the supply of additional Javelin missiles, equipment, and support services for end-users of the weapons system, including Tunisia. The US Department of State approved the possible sale of Javelin missile systems to Tunisia in late 2024.
The contract, structured as an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) agreement, builds on a previous award signed in May 2023, and supports the expansion of Javelin production capacity through new tooling and efficiency upgrades.
The latest order includes Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to several international partners, most notably Tunisia and Brazil, which will become the first operators of the Javelin system in North Africa and South America, respectively.
Outlook:
Tunisia’s acquisition of the Javelin system is expected to enhance its ability to respond to both immediate and long-term security threats, particularly against armored and mechanized threats along its borders. The acquisition would also deepen the already strong defense ties between Tunisia and the US, with the adoption of an American weapons system upon which additional training and cooperation can be planned. While this military partnership has persisted, the diplomatic wall between the United States and the rest of Tunisian government also remains firmly in place.
With security risks rising in neighboring countries, Tunisia is preparing to prevent potential threats and strengthen its national defense posture. Additionally, the deal could also create opportunities to expand collaborative military agreements, joint training, and defense initiatives with the United States and European partners, while strengthening Tunisia’s overall deterrence and regional security role.
