Summary:

On 13 August 2024, civil society organizations like Aswaat Nissa and I Watch joined an initiative led by La Dynamique Féministe which refused to celebrate Women’s Day, opting to protest and call for the liberation of all detained women.  

The participating organizations demanded the release of female journalists and activists, and for the respect of the judicial authority’s independence.  

Protestors also called for equality between genders and for the end of violations against women after fifteen feminicides occurred this year in addition to multiple deaths of female farm workers in trucks overturns, the most recent of which happened on Women’s Day.  

On the same day, President Saied went to visit female farm workers in Sidi Bouzid and promised to work on providing buses.  

Outlook: 

Domestic violence against women and poor conditions of female workers in interior regions are challenges that the government continues to struggle to tackle.  

The incapacity to combat these issues in addition to arrests targeting female activists and politicians will likely continue to foster tensions between President Saied’s administration and civil society organizations.
