Morocco: Plans to Expand High-Speed Rails, Renew Plane Fleet

Summary:

On 10 June 2025, Morocco’s National Office of Railways (ONCF), awarded Italian engineering company SITE a €140 million to provide telecommunications, power and cybersecurity systems for the new 400-km Kénitra–Marrakech rail line. 

The high-speed line is set to link airports and stadiums ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. 

Meanwhile, a report from Bloomberg indicated that Royal Air Maroc is seeking a deal with Boeing to renew its fleet with dozens of planes including the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner. This comes as Airbus is providing an order of 20 A220 jets to the Moroccan airline. 

The fleet modernization deals are planned within a broader program to increase air traffic capacity to 80 million by 2030. 

Outlook: 

Morocco’s plans to modernize transport infrastructure is likely to continue drawing international companies seeking a foothold in North African markets. Modern, reliable transport is essential for connect the economy internally and to international markets. 

Efforts to increase railway lines are planned to boost connectivity between Moroccan cities thus allowing more labor and tourist mobility within the country.  

Transport infrastructure and fleet modernization are likely to bolster the tourism sector which is foundational for Morocco’s broader economy.  Flight connectivity will also increase the ease of doing business in Morocco which has already shown signs of surging ahead in attracting Western businesses and investors.
