Tunisia: Multiple Solar Projects Announced as Green Energy Race Continues

by | Nov 29, 2025 | Economic, Tunisia

Summary:

On 27 November 2025, Secretary of State for Energy Transition Wael Chouchane announced the imminent launch of major photovoltaic projects, including a 100 MW site in Kairouan, a 50 MW site in Sidi Bouzid, and a 50 MW site in Tozeur.

Speaking at the third International Energy Transition Expo in Tunis, Chouchane emphasized the event’s role in attracting investment and fostering dialogue among public institutions, private developers, civil society actors, and experts.

He reaffirmed that Tunisia is on track to meet its goal of producing 35 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, stressing that the energy transition has evolved into a nationwide economic project.

Outlook:

Momentum in Tunisia’s renewable energy sector is likely to accelerate over the next year as the new photovoltaic projects break ground and as regulatory reforms continue to take shape. The government’s clear political messaging around diversification, transparency, and resilience suggests that investor engagement could strengthen, particularly in solar-heavy regions like central and southern Tunisia.

However, progress will depend on the timely finalization of the Energy Transformation Fund reform and the state’s ability to maintain predictable procedures for private developers. The advancement of these reforms is crucial at this stage, as it would allow Tunisia to consolidate its role as a regional hub for solar expertise and manufacturing, boosting local job creation and export capacity.
