Tunisia: Voltalia Secures Gabes Solar Project as Renewables Gain Momentum
Summary:
On 29 January 2026, French renewable energy company Voltalia secured the development rights for the 132MW Wadi solar project in Gabes, in southeastern Tunisia.
Located near the 139MW Menzel Habib project acquired by Voltalia in March 2025, Wadi is planned to start construction in 2027 and become operational in 2028. With this new project, Voltalia’s total energy production capacity in Tunisia approaching the construction phase now totals around 400MW.
Outlook:
At a time of persistent energy deficits, the project strengthens Tunisia’s solar pipeline and supports its long-term energy security, while also signaling continued confidence from European investors.
Additionally, Tunisia is expected to keep attracting foreign investment in solar power projects, reflecting a broader, gradual strategy to emerge as a regional player in renewable energy.
This momentum is underpinned by strong solar potential, greater policy alignment with energy-transition objectives, and Tunisia’s strategic assessment that the current expansion of the renewable energy market presents an opportunity to be leveraged as European markets pivot away from reliance on Russian energy products.
