Tunisia: Terrorist Attack Targeting Security Forces Disrupted in Sousse
Summary:
On 27 October 2022, the Tunisian government announced the disruption of an Islamic State (Daesh)-linked terrorist attack near the city of Sousse. The National Research Unit in Terrorist Crimes identified a suspect planning a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED) attack intended to target a security forces patrol in the area of Sousse. Following the arrest, security forces reportedly seized IED components, weapons, and ammunition from a residence linked to the suspect.
Our Outlook:
A disrupted attack linked to the Islamic State is a sober reminder that extremist ideologies continue to have reach into Tunisia. This issue is likely exacerbated by the economic struggles faced by many in the country, which make certain populations particularly vulnerable to recruitment and mobilization. The planned attack aligns with tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) observed previously in Tunisia whereby security forces primarily, and government buildings secondarily, are targeted for attack. Remote IED usage indicates a level of sophistication not consistently seen in Tunisia. Our team continues to closely monitor developments related to the counterterrorism environment in Tunisia.
