Tunisia: Energy Ministry Issues New Round of Renewable Energy Licenses
Summary:
On 17 February 2026, Tunisia issued 187 licenses covering 287 MW of renewable energy projects under its fifth licensing round. The permits, ranging from 1 MW to 10 MW each, were announced by Energy Minister Fatma Thabet Chiboub at a session hosted by the Professional Group for Renewable Energies under the Confederation of Citizen Enterprises (CONECT) in Tunis.
Secretary of State for Energy Transition Wael Chouchane said the licensing regime supports investment, fosters growth for SMEs and regional projects, and strengthens the country’s energy independence. Grid and infrastructure upgrades are being fast-tracked to integrate the new capacity, and better coordination of concessions, licenses, and self-generation is planned to ensure a continuous rollout of renewable projects.
Key recommendations from CONECT include a multi-year roadmap, the “Golden Permit,” self-connection, dedicated renewable lines, tariff indexation, storage integration, and training for project promoters. Concrete commitments include submitting an official document to the ministry, creating a follow-up committee, providing training before the sixth licensing round, and connecting stakeholders across the sector.
Outlook:
With these new initiatives, Tunisia is taking real steps toward strengthening regulatory frameworks and investment incentives to accelerate renewable energy growth. As competition in the sector intensifies, licensing experienced investors will be crucial not only to address energy shortages but also to position the country among regional leaders in a rapidly expanding market.
Tunisia’s strategic location and proximity to European markets keep the country well-positioned to facilitate cross-border energy trade and attract additional foreign investment, reinforcing its role in the regional renewable energy sector.
