Tunisia: EU Launches Data Platform to Track Funding, Investments
Summary:
On 7 May 2026, the European Union (EU) unveiled a new digital platform aimed at improving transparency and public tracking of EU-funded projects in Tunisia. The initiative centralizes data on 87 programs being implemented across the country, including information related to project budgets, objectives, geographic coverage, and implementation status.
EU Ambassador to Tunisia Giuseppe Perrone stated that the combined value of EU-backed initiatives in Tunisia currently reaches €1.35 billion, including financing from European financial institutions. He also noted that around 3,500 European companies are active in Tunisia, collectively supporting nearly 480,000 jobs.
Perrone described EU-Tunisia cooperation as part of a long-term partnership extending beyond government relations to include economic, cultural, and social dimensions. On migration issues, he said cooperation between Brussels and Tunis focuses on combating human trafficking networks, supporting refugee protection efforts, and encouraging legal migration pathways.
Outlook:
The launch of the platform will support the EU’s broader effort to strengthen the visibility and credibility of its engagement in Tunisia at a time of heightened scrutiny over foreign funding and international partnerships. The initiative may also help European institutions demonstrate the scale and continuity of their economic and development support in the country as both a public relations messaging tool and for diplomatic leverage in various negotiations with Tunisia.
More broadly, the emphasis on long-term cooperation and migration coordination suggests the EU will continue prioritizing Tunisia as a key regional partner despite ongoing political and economic uncertainties. However, migration-related cooperation is likely to remain politically sensitive, particularly as public debate continues over the balance between border management, refugee protection, and Tunisian sovereignty.
