Summary:

On 12 September 2023, a judge issued an arrest warrant for former Ennahdha Party Member of Parliament (MP) Mohamed Frikha on charges of financial and administrative corruption.

The case is related to Frikha’s role in a government oil company. Former Minister of Transport and Ennahdha official Abdelkarim Harouni was also arrested last week in relation to the same case.

Frikha previously came under scrutiny in 2022 and was arrested for his role in the operation of Syphax Airlines, of which he is the CEO.

Syphax Airlines was investigated for playing a role in the transport of Tunisians to Syria and Iraq where many became foreign fighters with the Islamic State.

Syphax Airlines issued a press release denying allegations of any financial misconduct related to the current investigation.

Outlook:

Ennadha remains under pressure from the current administration with numerous former officials and party leaders imprisoned and under investigation.

President Kais Saied continues to point to Ennahdha as the source of many of Tunisia’s challenges, with the corruption of the post-revolutionary period broadly attributed to the party which held significant political power at the time.

Under the banner of addressing the systemic corruption that remains from the period, President Saied has maintained popular support for his reform program and the focus of legal cases against Ennahdha leaders.

While this approach has prompted increasing international criticism, it will likely continue in the near term as the country moves toward an important political season in late 2023 and 2024.
