Algeria: Iron Ore Extractions Mark Strategic Effort to Strengthen Domestic Industry

by | Jan 3, 2026 | Algeria, Diplomacy, Political

Summary:

On 27 December 2025, Algerian firm Feraal, a subsidiary of the public group Sonarem, successfully carried out an large-scale blasting operation at the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit in Tindouf, in the far southwest. This record-setting operation allowed the extraction of 75,000 tonnes of raw iron ore.

It marks the beginning of a series of monthly blasts aimed at stockpiling raw iron ore for processing in Algerian steel plants, in line with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s strategic program to exploit and valorize national mineral resources.

The mine is set to be connected to Béchar via a 950 km railway, scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. Iron extracted from Gara Djebilet will eventually be transported over approximately 2,000 km to Oran, representing a historic first since Algeria regained sovereignty.

Outlook:

This industrial milestone underscores Algeria’s ambition to scale up domestic mineral exploitation and strengthen its steel production capabilities. The Gara Djebilet project positions Algeria as a key player in regional iron ore production, while also highlighting the government’s focus on infrastructure-driven industrial development.

However, the project will require careful management of logistics, ongoing investment in transport and processing infrastructure, and strict adherence to safety and environmental standards. Its successful execution could drive broader economic benefits, including job creation and industrial growth, though these gains will depend on efficient implementation and integration with national industrial plans.
