Tunisia: Chinese Firm to Purchase Cement Factory in Major Direct Investment
Summary:
On 23 March 2025, the Chinese Ambassador to Tunisia, Wan Li, said during an interview with the Tunis Africa News Agency, that a Chinese firm intends to buy a cement plant near the capital of Tunis, at an estimated value of more than $100 million.
The Ambassador stated that the Chinese company plans to upgrade the facility by introducing advanced technologies and enhancing existing equipment. These enhancements aim to boost productivity and efficiency while minimizing the plant’s environmental impact.
He also noted that, despite the current limited familiarity of Chinese companies with regulations in the Tunisian market, China continues to encourage its businesses to explore the Tunisian investment environment.
Outlook:
Through strategic investments in various sectors, China appears to be deepening its economic footprint in Tunisia. The acquisition of the cement plant is expected to attract further foreign investment, create jobs, and introduce advanced technologies that could enhance local industry.
This move aligns with the broader diplomatic strategies of both Tunisia and China with Tunisia seeking to diversify its foreign partnerships and reducing reliance on traditional allies, while China is aiming to strengthen its foothold in North Africa through strategic investments and economic cooperation.
The acquisition of the cement plant may foreshadow a large wave of Chinese investments in Tunisia. The two countries are strengthening their partnership through various initiatives, including China’s financing of El Menzah stadium renovation, a planned direct airline route between Tunisia and China to boost tourism, and the establishment of a Chinese-funded cancer treatment center in Gabès.
