Tunisia: Soldier Wounded by IED During Operation in Western Mountains
Summary:
On 22 March 2023, a Tunisian soldier was wounded by an improvised explosive device during a counterterrorism operation in the Mghila Mountain region. The soldier was evacuated to a military hospital in Tunis and was identified as being in stable condition by the Ministry of Defense.
Tunisian’s western mountains continue to serve as a safe haven for extremists operating across the borders of Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Military operations in the region are regular with direct clashes with militants occasionally reported. Chambi Mountain, which lies south and west of Mghila, has been the site of multiple clashes between terrorist cells and Tunisian security forces.
Outlook:
Given the worsening economic conditions in Tunisia, the potential for extremism to surge remains, particularly in the rural parts of the country where economic and social challenges can be more acute. Our team is continuing to monitor trends in the security environment with a particular focus on terrorism for notable changes.
