Tunisia: Kairoun Plant Commissioned as Largest Solar Project to Date

Summary:

On 16 December 2025, UAE-based AMEA Power officially commissioned the 120MW solar PV plant in Kairouan, now Tunisia’s largest operational solar project.

Construction on the plant began in May 2024, making it the country’s first renewable energy facility with a capacity above 100MW. Financing of US$86 million was secured in September 2023 with support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

According to the company, the plant is the first renewable energy project to connect directly to the national utility’s (STEG) 225kV high-voltage transmission network. AMEA Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais described the project as a key step in Tunisia’s energy transition, strengthening energy security and providing reliable, clean electricity.

The project’s commissioning follows an earlier announcement in November that the plant was nearing completion, marking a key milestone for Tunisia’s renewable energy sector.

Outlook:

The commissioning of the Kairouan solar plant marks the start of a new phase for large-scale solar in Tunisia. The expansion of such projects is expected to enhance energy security, diversify the country’s energy mix, and support Tunisia’s broader renewable energy transition.

The development of high-capacity solar projects could position Tunisia as a regional hub for solar energy. With its abundant solar resources, strategic location, and an emerging regulatory framework that supports private investment, Tunisia has the potential to attract both regional and international developers, while also fostering local expertise in renewable energy technologies.
