Mauritania: Agreement Expands Power Plant Collaboration with Finnish Firm
Summary:
On 27 November 2025, Wärtsilä, a Finnish energy technology company, signed an expanded Guaranteed Asset Performance (GAP) agreement with Société Mauritanienne d’Électricité (SOMELEC) for its 34 MW balancing power plant in Nouadhibou. The plant is equipped with two Wärtsilä 32 and two Wärtsilä 46 engines.
According to the announcement, the updated agreement transitions from a technical advisory role to a performance-based model, providing comprehensive lifecycle services. These services include range of technical monitoring and support from Wärtsilä’s technical experts.
Outlook:
The expanded GAP agreement highlights Mauritania’s potential in the electricity generation sector and its role as a destination for foreign investors and technology providers. Nouakchott has continued to show an openness to foreign investment and expertise as a means to gain a foothold in the race to provide Europe with green energy.
The project is expected to support operational continuity and technical development at the Nouadhibou plant and may encourage similar collaborations in other parts of the country. Over time, such initiatives could strengthen the power sector’s infrastructure, improve sector-wide practices, and enhance Mauritania’s attractiveness for future energy investments.
