Algeria: Boeing Tapped for Air Algérie’s Latest Fleet Expansion
Summary:
On 26 March 2026, Air Algérie announced the acquisition of 10 Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft as part of its fleet modernization, opting for the American aerospace giant for the latest purchase.
The aircraft will be delivered in two phases, with five units expected from July 2026 and the remaining five in 2027. The airline stated that the new planes will increase capacity, reduce fuel consumption, and improve passenger comfort on regional and international routes.
This order adds to ongoing fleet renewal efforts, including the introduction of Airbus A330-900neo, future Boeing 737 MAX-9 deliveries, and a purchase of 16 ATR 72-600 aircraft. Air Algérie reported carrying 8.8 million passengers in 2025 and aims to reach nearly 10 million in 2026.
Outlook:
Air Algérie’s fleet expansion reflects Algeria’s broader ambition to compete with Morocco for regional influence, a dynamic that extends beyond aviation into multiple strategic sectors. The move comes as both countries seek to position their national carriers as leading hubs in the Maghreb and across Africa, with air transport playing a key role in connectivity and economic projection.
This growing rivalry is likely to shape the pace and scale of investment in the sector, as each side aims to strengthen its presence on regional and international routes. However, structural constraints within Air Algérie may impact how effectively it can keep pace with its Moroccan counterpart.
The acquisition from a US manufacturer may also improve relations with the US alongside a simultaneous effort to create additional separation from traditional partner France.
