Tunisia: Tap Water Rationing, Limits on Usage Extended Indefinitely

by | Oct 3, 2023 | Economic, Social, Tunisia

Summary:

On 30 September 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture announced plans to extend water rationing measures that were put in place in March 2023.

Similar to the prior bans on particular uses of water, the extended rationing includes a ban on the use of tap water for washing cars, watering green spaces, and cleaning streets or public spaces. Using tap water for agricultural purposes has also been banned.

A multi-year drop in rainfall has continued to plague Tunisia among other North African countries. The network of dams across Tunisia’s north and central regions has consistently had fill rates far below seasonal averages.

Outlook:

Water resources will likely continue to cause both economic and social challenges in the near-term, even as the potential for rain rises into the winter months.
