Summary:

On 12 August 2025, Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mohamed Khaled, announced a strategic renewable energy project with a total investment of $287 million, aimed at expanding the country’s clean energy capacity.

The project includes a 160 MW photovoltaic solar plant in Nouakchott, a 60 MW wind farm in Boulenouar, and a 370 MWh battery storage system to ensure grid stability. Implemented through a 15-year public-private partnership (PPP), the government recently approved contracts selecting IWAFRICA as the lead contractor.

Under the agreement, the company IWAFRICA will establish a local company under Mauritanian law to design, finance, build, operate, and maintain the facilities. The company will also construct a high-voltage transmission line and a connected substation, which will be transferred to the Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMELEC) upon commissioning.

Outlook:

As Mauritania seeks to establish itself as a growing energy hub, this renewable energy project highlights the country’s efforts to attract private investment and strengthen public-private partnerships in the energy sector.

The initiative underscores Mauritania’s commitment to expanding its clean energy capacity and improving grid reliability, while also signaling its ambition to play a more prominent role in West Africa’s energy landscape.

The project is likely to enhance the country’s credibility with international investors and partners, potentially unlocking further funding and technical collaboration for future renewable projects. It also underscores the strategic importance of integrating energy storage solutions alongside production projects to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply.
